ULTRIX-32 Capacity Upgrade Installation Instructions

Order No. AA-ME87B-TE

This booklet tells how to install your capacity upgrade kit. Please keep this booklet and your
capacity upgrade media to use with subsequent ULTRIX releases.
Your capacity upgrade media label has one of the following formats:

ULTRIX-32 V2.0 users media
ULTRIX-32 V3.0 users media
The number of users allowed with your capacity upgrade kit appears in place of users, and
the type of distribution media you received appears in place of media.

What Is a Capacity Upgrade Installation Kit?
A capacity upgrade kit lets you increase the number of users on some ULTRIX systems. The
default number of users on an ULTRIX system is 2. Capacity upgrade kits are available to
increase the number of users allowed to log in simultaneously on some supported processors.

Capacity Upgrade Installation Kit Contents
Your capacity upgrade kit contains distribution media. The distribution media for your
capacity upgrade depends on the type of equipment you have. You can also install capacity
upgrade software over the network.
Table 1 lists the default media type for each processor for which capacity upgrade software is
available. Replace tape_drive with the name of the device special file where your capacity
upgrade distribution tape is to be located. Replace the question mark (?) with the unit number
of the distribution device.

Maximum Number of Users
The maximum number of users allowed for your system is listed on the maxusers line of
your system configuration file. The maximum number of users specified in your system
configuration file must be equal to or greater than the maximum number of users specified in
your capacity upgrade kit.
Use the grep command to determine the value of maxusers in your configuration file.
If you have a RISC processor, enter a command like the following:
% grep maxuaera /aya/conf/mipa/SYS'l'Jl:MHAM!l:

If you have a VAX processor, enter a command like the following:
% grep maxuaera /aya/conf/SYSTENNAMll:

Substitute the system name of your processor for SYSTEMNAME.
If the default value of maxusers is less than the maximum number of users allowed with
your capacity upgrade kit, or if you have changed the value of maxusers in your system
configuration file so that it is less than the number allowed with your kit, you must enter the
correct maximum number of users in your configuration file as part of the capacity upgrade

installation procedure.

What You Need to Know
To install the capacity upgrade kit, you must know:
•

How to log in to the superuser account

•

How to load the distribution media

•

Device special file names for your system

•

How to edit your system configuration file

•

How to rebuild the ULTRIX kernel, /vmunix, using the doconfig utility

•

How to reboot your system

Refer to the ULTRIX Reference Pages for information about doconfig(8.) Refer to the
appropriate system and network management guides for information about the other topics.
These instructions contain directions for two methods of installing the capacity upgrade
software:
•

Installing the capacity upgrade kit directly

•

Installing the capacity upgrade kit over the network

Read the section that applies to your installation.

Installing the Capacity Upgrade Kit Directly
Use the following procedure to install the capacity upgrade kit directly on your machine,
using tape or diskette as the distribution media:
1.

Load the distribution media on your system.

Type the following command:

# /etc/install_upgrade special
Replace special with the name of the device special file where your capacity upgrade
distribution media is located. See Table 1 for a list of distribution media and the
appropriate device special file for each.
A prompt similar to the following might appear if the capacity upgrade kit were being
installed on a system named mysys:

Is the correct capacity upgrade kit loaded on /dev/rcsla at mysys <y/n>?

Make sure the capacity upgrade kit that your machine is licensed to use is loaded, then
type y.
This message appears when the capacity upgrade software installation is complete:
Capacity Upgrade installation is done.

If your maxusers entry must be changed to equal the number of users allowed with

your capacity upgrade kit, edit your system configuration file. Your system
configuration file is /usr/syslconf/SYSTEMNAME, where SYSTEMNAME is the name
of your system.

If you changed your maxusers entry, you must rebuild your kernel. Do not rebuild

the kernel unless you changed maxusers.
7.

Reboot your system, whether or not you had to rebuild your kernel.

See the Guide to System Configuration File Maintenance for information about editing the
configuration file, rebuilding the kernel, and rebooting the system.
After you have rebooted the system, the capacity upgrade installation procedure is complete
and your system supports the appropriate number of users.

Note
Each time you enter multiuser mode after you have installed your capacity
upgrade kit, a message appears identifying the user capacity supported by your
machine.

Installing the Capacity Upgrade Kit Over the Network
If you are installing your capacity upgrade kit over the network, prepare the server first, then
transfer the software from the server to the client.

Before you begin your installation, make sure that the client machine is registered on the
server machine. See the Guide to the Remote Installation Service for information about
adding clients.

At the Server
Load the distribution media on your system. See Table 1 for a list of distribution media and
the appropriate device special file for each.

At the Client
Follow this procedure at the client:
1.

Type the following command:

# I etc/ install_upgrade server special
Replace server with the system name of the server, and replace special with the device
special file name on that server where the capacity upgrade distribution media is
located. See Table 1 for a list of distribution media and the appropriate device special
file for each.
A prompt similar to the following might appear if the capacity upgrade kit were being
installed over the network from a system named serv:
Is the correct capacity upgrade kit loaded on /dev/rcsla at serv <y/n>?

Make sure the capacity upgrade kit that your machine is licensed to use is loaded on
the server, then type y.
This message appears when the capacity upgrade software installation is complete:
Capacity Upgrade installation is done.

If your maxusers entry must be changed to equal the number of users allowed with
your capacity upgrade kit, edit your system configuration file. Your system
configuration file is lusr/syslconf/SYSTEMNAME, where SYSTEMNAME is the name
of your system.

If you changed your maxusers entry, you must rebuild your kernel. Do not rebuild
the kernel unless you changed maxusers.

Reboot your system, whether or not you had to rebuild your kernel.
