ULTRIX-32 Capacity Upgrade Installation Instructions

This document provides instructions for installing ULTRIX-32 Capacity Upgrade Kits, which are designed to increase the number of users allowed to log in simultaneously on ULTRIX systems from the default of two users.

• Kit Contents: The kit primarily consists of distribution media (e.g., tape, diskette, CDROM) or can be installed over a network.
• User Configuration: It emphasizes the importance of verifying and potentially updating the maxusers setting in the system configuration file to match or exceed the kit's user limit.
• Prerequisites: Installation requires superuser privileges and familiarity with system administration tasks such as media handling, file editing, kernel rebuilding (doconfig utility), and system rebooting.

• Installation Methods:

  • Direct Installation: Involves logging in as superuser, loading the distribution media, and executing the /etc/install_upgrade command with the appropriate device special file.
  • Network Installation: Requires preparing a server with the distribution media and then executing the same /etc/install_upgrade command from the client, specifying the server's name and device file.

• Post-Installation: After installation, if the maxusers setting was modified, the system's kernel must be rebuilt. All installations require a system reboot to apply the changes. Upon successful completion and reboot, the system will support the new user capacity, and a message confirming this will appear when entering multiuser mode.
