The VT100 was a character-oriented video display terminal released by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1978. It became an industry standard, widely emulated, due to its robust feature set including ANSI escape code support, multiple character sets, smooth scrolling, and 132-column mode. It served as a primary interface for DEC's VAX and PDP-11 systems and many other computers.
