This document is the "DECbridge 900MX Installation" manual, published in May 1994. Its primary purpose is to guide users through the installation and operational verification of the DECbridge 900MX module.
The DECbridge 900MX is a self-learning IEEE 802.1d Media Access Control (MAC) bridge, designed to interconnect six 10 Mb/s Ethernet LANs with a high-speed 100 Mb/s Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) network backbone. It performs functions such as filtering, forwarding, and transparent protocol translation between FDDI and Ethernet frames. Key features include flexible filtering capabilities (source, destination, protocol), multicast/broadcast storm limiting, spanning tree loop detection (IEEE 802.1d and Digital LB100 mode), built-in SNMP management (supporting various MIBs), and upgradeable firmware. The module can be installed into a DEChub 900 MultiSwitch or function as a standalone unit within a DEChub ONE docking station. It offers one FDDI dual attachment station (DAS) port, six Ethernet LAN ports (some switchable), and supports out-of-band management (OBM) via SLIP.
The manual details the installation steps, including ensuring proper power ratings, physically seating the module (which supports hot-swap), and connecting various port cables (FDDI, AUI, 10BaseT UTP/STP). It highlights the use of front panel LEDs to verify module status and provides troubleshooting information based on LED states.
Initial configuration and ongoing management are performed through a setup port, which provides a menu-driven interface. This interface allows users to reset settings, view current configurations, set SNMP read/write communities, add/delete SNMP trap addresses, dump error logs, configure in-band and out-of-band IP addresses and port speeds, and perform firmware upgrades. The document includes crucial safety warnings, such as avoiding looking into fiber optic cables due to potential eye injury and preventing power interruptions during firmware upgrades to avoid data corruption. Detailed connector pin assignments for 10BaseT, Optical Bypass Relay, and AUI adapters, along with internal and external crossover configurations, are also provided. Finally, it lists the product's operating specifications, physical dimensions, certifications (CE, CSA, FCC, TÜV, UL, VCCI), and acoustical specifications.
