KE11-E and KE11-F Instruction Set Options User's Manual

Order Number: EK-KE11E-OP

This user's manual, published in September 1976 by Digital Equipment Corporation, describes two hardware options for the PDP-11/40 System's KD11-A Programmed Data Processor: the KE11-E Extended Instruction Set (EIS) and the KE11-F Floating Instruction Set (FIS).

  • The KE11-E (EIS) option enhances the processor's capabilities by adding hardware support for fixed-point arithmetic. This includes instructions for multiplying and dividing signed 16-bit numbers, and for arithmetic shifting of signed 16-bit or 32-bit numbers (ASH, ASHC, MUL, DIV).
  • The KE11-F (FIS) option builds upon the KE11-E (which is a prerequisite for its installation). It further extends the instruction set to perform single-precision floating-point arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) on 24-bit numbers (FADD, FSUB, FMUL, FDIV).

Both options are designed to significantly increase processing speed and efficiency for their respective mathematical operations by providing hardware implementation, thus reducing the need for complex software routines. The manual details the purpose, configuration, and specifications for each option, provides installation procedures, and offers comprehensive programming information, including instruction formats, operations, and examples. Each chapter is structured to first present information for the KE11-E, followed by comparable details for the KE11-F.
