Preface

Intended Audience
This document is intended for users who are familiar with the Digital
Command Language (DCL) as well as with Files-11 Structure Levels 1
and 2 disk volumes. Users who need to check the readability and validity of
Files-11 disk volumes can use the information in this document to detect and
repair errors and inconsistencies.

Structure of This Document
This document is composed of three major sections.
The Format Section is an overview of the Verify Utility and is intended as
a quick reference guide. The format summary contains the DCL command
that invokes the Verify Utility, listing all qualifiers and parameters. The usage
summary describes how to invoke and exit from the Verify Utility, how to
direct output, and any restrictions you should be aware of.

The Description Section explains how to use the Verify Utility.
The Qualifier Section describes each DCL command qualifier and provides an
example of each. Qualifiers appear in alphabetical order.

Associated Documents
The Guide to VAX/VMS Disk and Magnetic Tape Operations provides
instructions for performing various tasks that involve private disk and
magnetic tape volumes.
The Guide to VAX/VMS System Management and Daily Operations provides
task-oriented instructions for maintaining a VAX/VMS operating system
environment. These instructions include applications of the Verify Utility that

are useful to system managers.

Conventions Used in This Document
Convention

Meaning
The phrase CTRL/x indicates that you must press
the key labeled CTRL while you simuitaneously

press another key, for example, CTRL/C, CTRL/Y,
CTRL/O.

Vertical series of periods, or ellipsis, mean either
that not all the data that the system would display

in response to the particular command is shown or
that not all the data a user would enter is shown.
[logical-name]

Square brackets indicate that the enclosed item
is optional. (Square brackets are not, however,
optional in the syntax of a directory name in a

file specification or in the syntax of a substring
specification in an assignment statement.)

New and Changed Features
In VAX/VMS Version 4.0 of the Verify Utility, you cannot continue an
operation after entering CTRL/C or CTRL/Y. Instead, the operation aborts.

VERIFY

VERIFY
The Verify Utility (VERIFY) checks the readability and validity of
Files—11 Structure Level 1 and Structure Level 2 disk volumes, and
reports errors and inconsistencies.
You can detect most classes of errors by executing the utility once,

using defaults; the use of many qualifiers to select the error classes
is not necessary.

Command Parameters
device-name
Specifies the disk volume or volume set to be verified. You can use a logical
name. If you specify a volume set, all volumes of the volume set must be
mounted as Files-11 structured. (For information on the Mount Utility, refer
to the VAX/VMS Utilities Reference Volume.)

usage summary

Invoking
You invoke the Verify Utility by entering the DCL command ANALYZE

/DISK_STRUCTURE. If you omit the device-name parameter, the utility
prompts you for it.

Exiting
The Verify Utility returns you to the DCL prompt after it completes its
operation.

1f you enter CTRL/C or CTRL/Y during execution of the utility, the operation
is aborted; note that you will not be able to resume the operation with the
DCL command CONTINUE.

Directing Output
The Verify Utility has two qualifiers that allow you to direct output. The
/LIST[=file-spec] qualifier causes the Verify Utility to produce a listing of the

specification.
The /USAGE|=file-spec] qualifier causes the utility to produce a disk usage
accounting file.

Determines whether the Verify Utility prompts you to confirm each

repair. If you respond with Y or YES, the utility performs the repair.

Otherwise, the repair is not performed.

Use the /CONFIRM qualifier with the /REPAIR qualifier.
Some repairs allow you the option of deleting the file. In these cases, you
can delete the file by responding to the prompt with D or DELETE. If you
respond with Y or YES, the utility performs the default repair. (For more
information on messages, see the VAX/VMS System Messages and Recovery
Procedures Reference Manual.)
The default is /NOCONFIRM.
