Part classes are the mechanism through which Digital implements decentralized control of part number responsibilities. 1.1 PURPOSE This document defines the part classes that are authorized for use within Digital. In addition to the definition of part class, the document identifies the organization and individual responsible for managing the part identifiers in each class and the responsible person to contact for part number assignment. 1.2 SCOPE This standard identifies the part classes approved for use within Digital. A part identifier may not be assigned unless its part class is authorized by this standard. This standard does not include: • Procedures for assigning or obtaining a part number within a part class • Definitions of formats or the meaning of character sequences within each class These procedures and formats are defined by each of the responsible groups. For further information refer to Section 2.3 in this document. This standard supplements the requirements of DEC STD 012-0 Part Identification Standard, which defines the general format of the part identifier and its subfields including the part class. Specific documents that elaborate on special requirements within certain part classes are listed in Appendix A. 2 RESPONSIBILITIES 2.1 RESPONSIBLE PERSONS Each part class in this standard is assigned to a person who has the following responsibilities: • Define and document procedures and requirements for part number assignment. • Ensure all part numbers and related data are posted and maintained in the corporate master parts data base (APPIX). In special cases, this requirement may be waived by the Domain Manager based on written justification. In such cases, the responsible person must ensure that the part numbers are posted to an alternate, equally accessible, parts master file. These exceptions are noted in the definition of the part class in head4.1. • Ensure that part class is used consistently, and that items are assigned to the proper part class. • Notify the Technical Domain Manager of any changes in the definition of the part class or in the responsible persons listed in this standard. d Digital Internal Use Only 1 EL-00012-02 06-May-1992 The procedure for part number assignment in the responsible department must be written and controlled by formal document control procedures. This documentation must also list the specific part data required in the assignment process. A current copy of this procedure must be kept on file with the Technical Domain Manager. 2.2 CONTACT PERSONS A contact person for each part class is designated by the responsible person. This person can fulfill requests for new part numbers in that class. 2.3 TECHNICAL DOMAIN MANAGER Digital’s part numbering system, the Unified Numbering Code(UNC), is managed as a technical domain as defined in DEC STD 066-1 Technical Domains in the Product Development Process. The Domain Manager is David Crowley (use the Employee Locator Facility (ELF) to obtain up-to-date phone, E-Mail, and location information). He is the responsible person for this section of DEC STD 012, and provides general control for all Digital standards that define the structure, assignment, or use of part classes, part numbers, part identifiers, and document identifiers. He approves all new part classes and maintains a list of all approved part classes. This list may include part classes assigned since the most recent revision of this standard. 3 NEW PART CLASS ASSIGNMENT Part classes are assigned to categories of parts. As categories evolve, new part classes will be created. New part classes must be approved by the Domain Manager. When requesting a new part class designation, the requestor must supply the following information: • A short clear description of the part category. • A justification for the new class and a description of its relationship with other classes. • The names of the responsible department, responsible manager, and the contact person who will actually assign the numbers. • A statement of the process for posting the parts to the Corporate Master Parts Data Base. This statement should indicate whether these parts are intended to be salable, whether there are any geographic restrictions, whether there is a standard cost, whether a parts list is required, and whether there is any other dependency or integration with corporate processes. • A preliminary description of the procedure for obtaining parts in this class. • A preliminary description of any procedures, patterns, or algorithms used to assign specific part numbers within the class. • An estimate of the initial volume of parts and the expected rate of growth. 2 d Digital Internal Use Only EL-00012-02 06-May-1992 4 APPROVED PART CLASSES These are the only part classes authorized for use in Digital. 4.1 DEFINITIONS AND RESPONSIBLE PARTIES This segment lists all approved part classes, their definition, and the parties responsible. In cases where there are multiple contact people for a single class, a note of explanation is provided in Section 4.2. Approved Part Classes Blank Options, modules, systems, and finished goods. In particular, a single-part class with multiple contact persons are explained in the following notes rather than in the body of the table All names and electronic addresses are subject to change at any time. If you are unable to reach one of the contact persons, contact the responsible person for help. If you are unable to reach the responsible person, contact the Domain Manager. 4.2.1 Note 1—Engineering Support Part Number Assignment Part numbers under the responsibility of Engineering Support Operations are assigned locally by the engineering support function at each design site. The part classes handled in this manner are: 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 70, 75, 76, 93, 95, 96, and MA. The Engineering Support Operations organization assigns a block of numbers to each site’s engineering support function upon request. The contact for obtaining blocks of numbers is Brian Keefer. Once the block of numbers is allocated, it is the responsibility of the engineering support group at the site to assign individual part numbers and to ensure that the part number and related information is added to APPIX. Table 1 identifies the design sites where part number assignment services are available, and the name of the contact individual at each site. Note that the information in this table is subject to change without notice. Contact Brian Keefer for updated information. 36 d Digital Internal Use Only EL-00012-02 Table 1: 06-May-1992 Design Sites Offering Part Number Assignment Site Function ACO Contact George Fiffy AEO DSSE European Telecommunications and Networks EIC, Annecy Rene Gindre AYO Vivian Rankin BLK Martha Sommers BXC Bonnie McCullough BXC John Doiron BXC Kenneth Lee BXC Mike Joseph BXC Newton Taylor BXC Phil Reed CXO Component Engineering (including part classes 50, 54, 70, 74 , 93, 95, and 96) Donna Tegeler CXO Engineering (including part classes 94, EM and MP) Judy Kilgore DAS Lisa Reed DAS DSL Engineering DBO Dale Martin John Rogers DEK DSSE FER EIC, Seoul Sam Lee DSG Bob Davis DSG Debbie Sanchez DSG Donald Salafia DSG Guido Simone DSG Mike Scafidi DSG Wayne Bortman JGO Rene de Beer JGO DSL Europe, Nijmegen Roel Peters JSO DSSE Japan EIC, Tokyo JSOCSS::ENGSERVICE KAO DSSE GIA Canada EIC, Kanata Bruce Davy KBO Berndt Rosenthal KBO Guenter Gollnick LKG John Doiron LTN Gini Abrams LTN John Doiron MKO Kevin McBrine MKO David Bragdon MKO Dick Godbois d Digital Internal Use Only 37 EL-00012-02 06-May-1992 Table 1 (Cont.): Design Sites Offering Part Number Assignment Site Function Contact MKO DSSE Coordinator for Remote Sites Tony Chulada MKO DSSE U.S. Discrete Manufacturing EIC, Merrimack Mike Buczynski MKO DSSE U.S. Services EIC, Merrimack Mike Buczynski MKO DSSE U.S. Telecommunications and Networks EIC, Merrimack Mike Buczynski MLO Andrea MacMillan MLO Charles Butts MLO Doug Zielinski MLO Larry Narhi MLO Richard Braun MLO Roy Batchelder MLO Chief Engineers Office Kathy Rando MOO GIA Manufacturing and Engineering Jane Thompson MRO Diane Garneau MRO George Dvorak MRO Patrick Montjoie REO John Higgins SBP DSSE European Services EIC, Fareham SHR Andrew Ogilvie Erlie Daley SNA DSSE SPR EIC, Sydney Paul Kwok SPO Deborah Billingsley TAY John Quinn TAY Lisa Jacobs TWO Eddie Vaughan UFC DSSE European Manufacturing EIC, Munich WMO Ingrid Woehrle Karen Jette 4.2.2 Note 2—Usage of 76 class parts 76-65000 to 76-65999 are reserved for Engineering/Manufacturing Process and Quality documentation that applies to all products and manufacturing plants.
