The manual is divided into three main sections:

1. System Overview (Chapter 1): This chapter provides a physical description of the VAX 4000 Model 500, which is housed in a BA441 slide-mounted enclosure designed for standard 19-inch racks. It details the major units, including:

   • Front Assemblies: Mass storage shelf (for ISEs and tape drives), System Control Panel (with DC OK, over-temperature indicators, and Halt/Restart/Run buttons), and the main ON/OFF switch.
   • Card Cage: Contains memory modules, the CPU, Q-bus option modules, and a Console Bulkhead Assembly (with power-up mode, baud rate, and break enable/disable switches, bus node ID plugs, DSSI, SCSI, and Ethernet connectors).
   • Power Supply: Monitors internal temperature and fan speed, shutting down the system as a precautionary measure if issues are detected. It also describes various power bus connectors.
   • Fans: Explains their function in air circulation and the system's response to fan failures.

2. Installation (Chapter 2): This chapter outlines the step-by-step procedures for installing the system. Key procedures include:

   • Verifying site preparation, gathering necessary tools, and checking the shipment.
   • Physically installing the equipment slides into the cabinet and mounting the VAX 4000 chassis onto these slides (noting the system's 53.5 kg/118 lb weight).
   • Installing cable management and cable tie brackets.
   • Setting system controls on the System Control Panel and Console Bulkhead Assembly, including critical warnings about powering off before making Ethernet connections and the importance of Digital-supplied slot covers for cooling, EMI/RFI compliance, and protection.
