THE PDP-11/60 MICROPROGRAMMING TOOLS REFERENCE MANUAL

Order Number: AA-C815A-TC

This manual describes the essential tools for developing and managing microprograms on the PDP-11/60's Writable Control Store (WCS) option. It is organized into five main parts, providing an introduction to the tools, detailed descriptions of each, and a user's guide for their combined application. Appendices offer a syntactic summary, predefined settings, dispatch file details, a sample microprogram, and error messages.

The core tools covered are:

  • MICRO-11/60 Assembler: This tool converts source microprograms into loadable object modules. It facilitates symbolic definitions of fields and macros, manages address assignments, and performs syntax and error checking to aid efficient microprogram development.
  • Microprogram Loader (MLD): MLD is responsible for loading microprogram object modules into the WCS. It initializes the WCS, loads resident sections, and allows for multiple object modules to coexist, enabling convenient updates and patching of microprograms.
  • Microprogram Debugging Tool (MDT): A standalone program designed for debugging 11/60 microprograms. MDT allows microprogrammers to monitor program execution, set and delete breakpoints, examine and modify data or instructions in main or micro memory, and alter program control. It also saves and restores the machine state during debugging sessions.

The manual is intended for experienced assembly-language programmers and hardware engineers familiar with the RSX-11M operating system.
