TE16/TE10W/TE10N DECmagtape Technical

Maintenance Manual

Order Number: EK-OTE16-TM-001

This document serves as a comprehensive technical and maintenance manual for the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) TE16 DECmagtape transport, published in August 1977. It covers the TE16, as well as its configurations as a TE10W master and TE10N slave.

The manual is structured into six chapters:

  • Introduction: Provides general information, including a basic and functional description of the TE16, its specifications (supporting 7- or 9-track magnetic tape with densities up to 1600 characters per inch), and highlights improvements over the earlier TU16 model. It also details the various system configurations using M8926 and M8927 interface modules.
  • Installation: Contains complete instructions for site planning, power and environmental requirements, unpacking, physical installation, cabling diagrams for diverse processor/controller combinations, and initial acceptance test procedures.
  • Operating Instructions: Guides operators through powering up, loading and unloading tape, and offers basic troubleshooting techniques, focusing on the system's control panel.
  • Customer Care and Preventive Maintenance: Outlines customer responsibilities for supplies and system cleanliness, proper magnetic tape care, and provides a schedule for preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning and inspections.
  • Theory of Operation: Delivers a detailed understanding of the TE16's internal mechanisms, covering power supply, reel motor and brake control, capstan motion, and read/write data paths. It includes in-depth descriptions of key modules and the operation of Phase Encoded (PE) and Non-Return-to-Zero Inverted (NRZI) circuitry.
  • Servicing: Offers comprehensive servicing information, including lists of required test equipment and diagnostic programs, detailed procedures for preventive maintenance, adjustment and alignment, component removal and replacement, and corrective maintenance troubleshooting guides for various system failures.

Appendices cover magnetic tape fundamentals and recording methods, along with a glossary of technical terms. The manual is designed to equip users and field service engineers with the necessary knowledge to effectively install, operate, and maintain the TE16 DECmagtape transport system.
