PDP-11 MACRO-11

Language Reference Manual

Update Notice 1

Order Number: AD-V027A-T1

This document is "UPDATE NOTICE 1" (May 1984) for the "PDP-11 MACRO-11 Language Reference Manual" (March 1983, document number AA-V027A-TC). Its primary purpose is to provide changes and additions to the existing manual, detailing specific page replacements and new content.

The base manual describes how to use the MACRO-11 relocatable assembler to develop assembly language programs for PDP-11 systems, covering various operating environments such as IAS, MICRO/RSX, VAX/VMS, RSTS/E, RSX-11M, RSX-11M-PLUS, and RT-11, and referencing MACRO-11 Version 5.2.

Key updates introduced by this notice (reflecting MACRO-11 Version 5.2 changes, building on prior Version 5.1 changes) include:

  • Support for the 8-bit DEC Multinational Character Set (MCS), which is now incorporated and explicitly supported by several directives (e.g., .ASCII, .ASCIZ, .ERROR, .IF, .IFF, .IRP, .IRPC, .NCHR, .PRINT, .REM, .SBTTL, .TITLE) and discussed in relevant manual sections (e.g., comment field, ASCII conversion characters, macro arguments).
  • Addition of new directives: .CROSS, .INCLUDE, .LIBRARY, .MDELETE, .NOCROSS, .REM, and .WEAK.
  • Default setting changes: The default for the LC argument shifted from .DSABL LC to .ENABL LC.
  • New .ENABL/.DSABL options: LCM and MCL.
  • Refinements from Version 5.1 (previously incorporated into the base manual's March 1983 edition), such as the addition of the CALLR opcode, an expanded range for automatic local symbol generation (30000$ to 65535$), changes to listing text case (mostly uppercase), enhanced control over table of contents and symbol table listings, updated assembler statistics, and an increased maximum object record size (from 42 to 128 bytes).
