This document is an Upgrade Guide detailing the process of converting various Digital VAXstation 3100 series systems (Models 30, 38, 40, 48, and 76) to a VAXstation 4000 Model 60 workstation.
Intended for Digital Services or qualified self-maintenance personnel with experience in VAXstation hardware, the guide provides step-by-step instructions for:
- Preparation: Including critical pre-upgrade console commands, recording system configurations (like Ethernet hardware address and SCSI IDs), and mandatory software and user disk backups.
- Component Transfer: Safely removing internal components (such as RZ2x disk drives, mass storage controllers, graphics/scanline coprocessors, and memory modules) from the VAXstation 3100 units and installing them into the VAXstation 4000 Model 60. A key step is the exchange of Ethernet ROMs between the old and new systems.
- System Restoration: Reassembling the VAXstation 4000 Model 60, connecting peripherals, and powering it up.
- Verification: Running diagnostics and the "Show Config" command to ensure successful upgrade.
- Return Preparation: Instructions for restoring and packaging the original VAXstation 3100 system unit for shipment back to Digital, along with required return forms.
