AlphaServer DS20E 833 MHz CPU Read Me First

This document provides instructions and important information for upgrading an AlphaServer DS20E system by adding an 833 MHz CPU.

Key points include:

• CPU Identification: The add-on CPU is part number 54-30482-01 and requires a KN311/312 CPU Installation Card.
• Firmware Prerequisite: Crucially, before physically installing the CPU upgrade, the system's firmware (SRM console and PALCode) must be upgraded to version 6.0. The firmware can be found at http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/firmware/readmes/ds20.html.

• Post-Installation Verification: After upgrading, users must verify that the CPUs are correctly installed and recognized by using the show configuration and show cpu commands.

  • Verification steps include checking that the firmware versions are correct, processors are displayed with the right specifications (e.g., 8MB Bcache), core logic is identified, memory is correct, and that all CPUs are shown as active and good.
