This document is an addendum to the DECsystem 5100 Maintenance Guide (EK-422AA-MG), published by Digital Equipment Corporation in April 1991. It provides general information and maintenance procedures for three specific drive options: the RRD42 disc drive, the RZ23L hard disk drive, and the TZK10 cartridge tape drive. It is intended for Digital Customer Services personnel and self-maintenance customers.
The document is organized into three main chapters, each dedicated to one of the drives, plus an appendix on related documentation, and an errata section. For each drive, it covers:
RRD42 Disc Drive (CD-ROM):
- Description: A half-height, 5.25-inch, 600-megabyte compact disc storage device utilizing the SCSI-2 bus, capable of audio playback, and supported by ULTRIX, VMS, MS-DOS, and SCO UNIX.
- Usage & Configuration: Details front controls, rear components (SCSI ID jumpers, mode select jumper), how to load/eject discs using a caddy, and drive configuration.
- Installation & Testing: Provides step-by-step installation procedures (including system shutdown, running ROM-based diagnostics, physical mounting), and power-up testing to verify system recognition.
- Specifications: Includes data transfer rates, access times, interface, audio output, environmental, and physical dimensions.
RZ23L Hard Disk Drive:
- Description: A half-height, 3.5-inch, 121-megabyte (formatted) SCSI hard disk drive, designed as a replacement for the RZ23, for random-access data storage.
- Usage & Configuration: Explains that software must be installed and highlights that the drive is not internally terminated, requiring external SCSI bus termination. It details how to assign a unique SCSI ID.
- Installation: Describes mounting the drive on upper or lower trays within the system.
- Specifications: Lists technical specifications (e.g., recording density, track density, disks) and environmental/physical specifications, including guidelines for storage.
TZK10 Cartridge Tape Drive:
- Description: A half-height, 5.25-inch streaming tape drive using quarter-inch cartridges (QIC) for archival storage and data collection, with a SCSI interface.
- Usage & Configuration: Details controls (LED indicators and eject button), how to use the cartridge tape (setting write-protect, inserting, removing), and procedures for retensioning the tape. It also covers SCSI ID settings and the Disable Auto Density (DADS) jumper for different operating systems.
- Installation & Testing: Provides installation procedures similar to the RRD42, along with methods for testing the drive using ROM-based diagnostics (CT and S2 tests).
- Specifications: Comprehensive technical, power, environmental, and physical specifications for the tape drive and cartridges.
An errata section is included, providing crucial corrections and clarifications to the RRD42 Disc Drive Installation Procedure (specifically regarding removing the partition, mounting the RRD42 on the left-hand side of the lower drive tray, and inserting the bezel).
