DECserver 510 Hardware Installation

Order Number: EK-DS510-IN

This document is a two-part manual for the DECserver 510 terminal server, covering both its hardware installation and troubleshooting/problem-solving.

Part 1: Hardware Installation This section guides the user through the initial setup and configuration of the DECserver 510, which connects IBM 3270 terminals (and compatible PCs) and 3x74 Cluster Control Units (CCUs) to Standard or ThinWire Ethernet networks. Key areas include:

  • Overview: Introduction to the installation process, required tools, and a description of the server's hardware components (CPU module, Ethernet controller, CXM04 line cards, system enclosure), connectors, switches, and LED indicators.
  • Site Verification: Detailed specifications for the server's physical, environmental, and electrical requirements, along with cabling guidelines for various connections (Ethernet, 3270 terminals, CCUs).
  • Installation and Configuration: Instructions for installing the server on a tabletop or into a rack (including removing the plastic enclosure and attaching rack-mount brackets). It covers configuring the Ethernet controller for ThinWire or Standard Ethernet, and setting up the CXM04 line cards for different terminal/CCU configurations using jumpers and switches.
  • Cabling and Testing: Procedures for connecting all necessary cables, determining CXM04 port numbers, labeling cables, testing connections, and performing initial self-tests using specific boot modes and observing LED indicators.

Part 2: Hardware Problem Solving This part provides tools and procedures for diagnosing and repairing hardware faults in the DECserver 510. It covers:

  • Troubleshooting Tools: Explanations of how various boot modes (0, 1, 2, 3, 7, F) can be used for diagnostics, interpretation of LED display diagnostic and software error codes, and the use of a local console terminal and loopback/barrel connectors for testing.
  • Problem Identification: Flow charts and initial troubleshooting steps are provided for problems affecting individual ports, multiple ports on a single line card, or all server ports.
  • Removal and Installation Procedures for Faulty Modules: Step-by-step instructions for safely removing and installing Field-Replaceable Units (FRUs) such as the Ethernet controller fuse, various cables, the CPU module, Ethernet controller module, and CXM04 line cards, for repair or replacement purposes.
  • Parts List: Appendices include comprehensive lists of part numbers for FRUs, hardware accessories, cables, power cords, and associated software/hardware documentation.
