CLASSIC OS/8 FORTRAN IV

Order Number: DEC-08-XPDBE-B-D

This document describes the CLASSIC OS/8 FORTRAN IV software, an educational computer system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation. It is a subset of the OS/8 operating system, designed for ease of use in educational settings for problem-solving and computational tasks. The software is compact, powerful, and suitable for users of all experience levels.

The CLASSIC OS/8 FORTRAN IV system includes several programs:

  • Concise Command Language (CCI): Provides a set of terminal commands for file management and operations.
  • PIP (Peripheral Interchange Program): A versatile utility for copying and manipulating files, including duplicating the system disk.
  • FOTP (File Oriented Transfer Program): Facilitates the transfer of files between devices.
  • FDIT: A text editor for creating and modifying source and data files for the FORTRAN IV compiler.

FORTRAN IV is a widely-accepted programming language that resembles conventional algebra and higher mathematics. The CLASSIC OS/8 FORTRAN IV is an extended version of the ANSI FORTRAN Standard. It supports standard FORTRAN language features (excluding double-precision arithmetic), generalized array subscripting, one- to seven-dimensional arrays, and direct access I/O for efficient data file management. It also supports mixed-mode arithmetic, octal constants, logical IF statements, and general arithmetic expressions.

The system offers features for text manipulation, including Hollerith field specifications, literals, constants, DATA statements, BLOCK DATA, and EQUIVALENCE. Arithmetic function definition is also provided, with all features optimized for execution speed. A library of mathematical functions for logarithms, absolute values, trigonometric functions, and character string manipulation is included.

A key feature is the dynamic overlay mechanism, allowing programs larger than the main memory to be run by automatically loading overlays on call. The system supports up to seven independent overlay levels, each with up to 16 overlays.

Error diagnostics are robust, providing clear English explanations for format errors and complete error traceback to help students identify and correct mistakes.

The minimum hardware requirement is a CLASSIC system, with no optional hardware or prerequisite/optional software supported. The support category is 'C', meaning all services are provided for a fee. Updates are available at prevailing handling and service charges.

The software is furnished under a license for single CPU use and can be copied and modified for use on that CPU, provided DIGITAL's copyright notice is included. CLASSIC OS/8 FORTRAN IV is a CLASSIC option and can only be purchased by licensed CLASSIC OS/8 BASIC users. The product code for a single-use license with binaries on a floppy disk and documentation is QFE08-CY.
