8K FORTRAN

Version 1

Order Number: DEC-08-XPDAC-B-D

This document describes 8K FORTRAN Version 1, a version of FORTRAN II designed for the PDP-8 computer. It functions as both a language and a translator, allowing programmers to express problems using English-like words and mathematical statements that the computer can understand. Programs can be prepared off-line or using an editor, and the compiler translates them into symbolic language (SABR), which is then assembled into relocatable binary code.

The 8K paper tape FORTRAN system includes a one-pass compiler, the SABR assembler, a linking loader, and a library of subprograms. It is noted that 8K FORTRAN is a subset of OS/8 FORTRAN II, and the OS/8 version is supported as Category B.

Minimum hardware requirements include a PDP-8 Family Processor with 8K of Memory and a PC8E High-Speed Papertape Reader/Punch. Optional hardware supported is additional memory. There are no prerequisite or optional software dependencies. No training credits are offered. The support category is C, with software support provided as outlined in the Software Support Categories Addendum.

The update policy states that no updates are planned for this product. Ordering information indicates the software is licensed for single-CPU use and can be copied and modified for use on that CPU, provided Digital's copyright notice is included. The distribution media available is paper tape, specified with a "Q" number like QF050-CB. The standard option QF050-C includes a single-use license, binaries, and documentation on paper tape, without support services.
