PDP-9 Extended Arithmetic Element Part 1

Order Number: MAINDEC-9A-D0GA-D

This document describes Part 1 of the PDP-4/7/9 Extended Arithmetic Element (EAE) Diagnostic, a program designed to verify the correct operation of all EAE functions, excluding multiplies and divides. The diagnostic is structured into three logical sections, which must be run incrementally:

  1. Set-Up Test: Verifies the functionality of all EAE set-up operations, except for the LACS (Load Accumulator from Shift Counter) instruction.
  2. SC and Basic Shift Test: Confirms the correct operation of the Shift Counter (including LACS) and verifies that the Accumulator (AC) and Multiplier-Quotient (MQ) registers can perform single-place left and right shifts across all 18 bits.
  3. Random Data and Normalize Test: Checks that random data can be shifted left and right between 0 and 448 places, ensures the NORM and NORMS instructions operate as specified, and verifies that the processor correctly handles interrupts after an EAE operation.

The document also provides details on the program's storage requirements, necessary subprograms (like the Teletype Output Package), and minimum equipment (PDP-4/7/9 with EAE option). It includes instructions for loading the program, setting console switches to control behavior (e.g., enable/disable error typeouts, halt after operations), and explains the format and content of error messages generated when hardware malfunctions are detected. Several examples of error typeouts are provided to illustrate how to interpret diagnostic results.
