Replacement DELNI Technical Information

This document, "Replacement DELNI Technical Information," provides a comprehensive technical overview of the replacement Digital Ethernet Local Network Interconnect (DELNI) unit, aimed at Digital Services Engineers.

The replacement DELNI unit offers the same functionality as the original but incorporates newer technology for enhanced reliability and features a redesigned plastic casing for simpler rackmount installation.

The manual covers:

• Introduction: An overview of the DELNI's functional and physical characteristics, including its two selectable operational modes (LOCAL and GLOBAL), its applications in various LAN configurations (Standalone, Two-Tier, and Connected DELNI LANs), and details on its nine communication interfaces (eight local and one global). It also describes the unit's controls, indicators, voltage selection switch, and circuit breaker.
• Network Configuration Guidelines: Provides basic guidelines and limitations for deploying the DELNI in different network environments, including restrictions related to transceiver cable types and lengths.
• Interfaces, Input/Output Signal Flow, and Specifications: Details the electrical characteristics of the communication interfaces (Local and Global connectors), input/output signal flow, timing relationships (including squelch circuit, heartbeat, and collision signaling), input power requirements, and environmental specifications.
• Theory of Operation: Explains the internal circuit characteristics, including the power supply, AUI concentrator chip (ACC), and isolation mechanisms, along with a detailed functional theory of operation for both LOCAL and GLOBAL modes, describing how the DELNI handles data routing, collision detection, and signaling.
