SGEN Advanced Monitor Utility Program

This document describes SGEN, an Advanced Monitor Utility Program for PDP-15 systems with mass storage. SGEN allows users to customize and generate specialized software systems from a general-purpose ADVANCED Monitor by either modifying an existing system or creating a new one.

Key capabilities include:

• System Modification: Altering API and Teletype usage, changing I/O devices and their handlers, modifying the system's Skip Chain order and contents, and adjusting .DAT slot assignments.
• New System Generation: Deleting unwanted device handlers and system programs, adding user programs as system programs, optionally including a core dump area (↑Q area), and re-ordering system programs to optimize loading times, especially for DECtape systems.

The program operates in three sequential units (SGEN, .SGEN2, and .SGEN3) that handle different aspects of system configuration, such as I/O device parameters, system file management, and library updates. The manual provides a step-by-step procedure for using SGEN, emphasizes pre-operational planning for efficiency, and includes details on error messages and an example of optimizing an 8K DECtape system.
