Sgen - DOS Utility Program

Order Number: DEC-15-USGNA-A-D

This document describes DOSGEN, the DOS-15 System Generator Utility Program, which allows system managers to modify and maintain existing Disk Operating Systems (DOS-15) for PDP-15 computers. It is intended for users familiar with DOS-15 and other utility programs.

The manual details DOSGEN's interactive operation through eight sequential sets of questions (A-H) that enable modification of three primary system areas:

  1. System Parameters (Section A): Adjusts defaults such as API availability, console keyboard type, Monitor Identification Code (MIC), buffer allocation, spooler configuration, memory patching area size, file protection codes, and clock frequency.
  2. I/O Devices and Handlers (Sections B, C, D, E): Allows for retaining, deleting, or adding device handlers and their associated skips. Users can define new devices and configure device-specific parameters, including magnetic tape channels or line printer sizes, and modify the system's skip chain order.
  3. System Programs (Sections F, G, H): Manages the assignment and number of .DAT slots, modifies parameters for existing core-image system programs (like Q AREA size and overlays), and supports the addition of new core-image system programs and their overlays.

Chapter 3 provides the broader context for using DOSGEN, covering the initial setup of DOS-15 from restore tapes, strategies for managing disk space, and integrating optional hardware or software components such as Floating Point FORTRAN or the UNICHANNEL-15 option. It also outlines procedures for subsequent DOSGEN runs and the coordinated use of other utilities like PIP and PATCH for comprehensive system maintenance. Appendices include detailed operating instructions for DOSSAV (the save/restore program) and listings of critical system information blocks and file directories.
