ABE-14 (Accessory Box Test)

This document outlines the ABE-14 program, designed to test and diagnose the operation of an "Accessory Box" connected to a PDP-14 controller. The PDP-14, in turn, interfaces with a PDP-8I or 8L computer that executes the diagnostic program.

Key aspects include:

• Purpose: To verify the functionality of components within the Accessory Box, such as Timers and Retentive Memories. Specific tests measure the time it takes for an output to "set" and print this time to the PDP-8 teletype.
• Hardware Requirements: A PDP-8I or 8L computer, a PDP-14 controller, a PDP-14 to PDP 8I/L Interface Module (M745), and the PDP-14 Accessory Box itself. Input, Output, and Register Modules (M746's) are also required.
• Program Storage: The program occupies the first 3000 (octal) memory locations of the PDP-8.
• Loading and Starting: The program is loaded using the standard PDP-8 Binary Loader. It can be started at different addresses (0200 or 0201) depending on whether operator input is needed for A-Box configuration. Control switch settings on the PDP-8 govern program behavior, such as looping tests, error halting, and error printing.
• Operation: The setup involves connecting the PDP-14 to the PDP-8, installing necessary modules, powering up both systems, loading the program, and responding to teletype prompts about the A-Box configuration. Upon completion of a pass, the teletype bell rings.
• Retentive Memory Testing: Special procedures are required for testing retentive memories, including simulating a power failure in the PDP-14.
• Error Handling: The program outputs two-letter error designators and descriptions of failing conditions. A module call list is provided to identify potentially faulty modules based on these error codes.
• Program Description: Detailed descriptions of various tests (Test 3 through Test 11) are provided, covering checks of status words, output timing, and the "remembering" capability of retentive memories after power cycles.
