LOAD-14

Order Number: DEC-14-LZPB-D

This document describes LOAD-14, a PDP-8 program designed for Family-of-8 computers. Its main purpose is to load PDP-14 binary programs from paper tape into 8 memory and perform a checksum verification. It supports both ASR-33 teletype and high-speed paper tape readers and is typically used for PDP-14 tapes compatible with VER-14 and RUN-14 programs, but not SIM-14.

To operate, LOAD-14 itself is first loaded using the standard PDP-8 Binary Loader. Users then place the PDP-14 binary tape in the designated reader and configure specific Switch Register (SR) settings: SR0 selects the reader type, and SR11 determines if the program loads into tape-indicated locations or defaults to PDP-8 memory starting at 0000. After depressing "START," a successful load and checksum will result in the Accumulator (AC) lights displaying 0000. Errors may require repositioning the tape and using "CONTINUE," or could indicate a faulty tape or reader. Programs exceeding 1K may require pressing "CONTINUE" after each segment if SR11 is set to 1. LOAD-14 shares similarities with the PDP-8 Binary Loader but lacks extended memory loading capability and loads into the memory bank specified by the Data Field switches at startup. Its sumcheck calculation method is also precisely defined.
