DE20M-AR Option ROM Installation

Order Number: EK-DE20M-IC

This document provides instructions for installing the DE20M-AR Option ROM, which enables remote boot capabilities in a PATHWORKS (version 4.1 or later) environment on a DEC EtherWORKS 3 Turbo board.

The installation process is divided into three main stages:

  1. Installing the ROM Chip:

    • Follow electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions.
    • If installing on a new board, set it up first using the DEC EtherWORKS 3 Turbo User Information manual.
    • Align the ROM chip's notch and pins with the socket, then carefully insert and firmly seat the chip.
    • After installation, insert the board into the system and power it on.
  2. Configuring the Board:

    • Use a system with DOS installed.
    • Insert the DEC EtherWORKS 3 Turbo diskette and run the NICSETUP program.
    • Within NICSETUP, enable "Remote Boot Enable" under "Custom Configuration" and set the "Memory Mode" to 32K (which defaults to D0000h).
    • Save the configuration, exit NICSETUP, and then perform a cold boot (power off and on) for changes to take effect.
  3. Preparing the Client and Server:

    • This step is typically handled by the PATHWORKS system manager.
    • Copy the DEC EtherWORKS 3 Remote Boot task image files (e.g., EWRK3_H.TSK, EWRK3_S.TSK) from the provided diskette to the server's SYS$COMMON:[PCSA.LOAD_FILE.V41] directory using the NFT COPY/BLOCK command (the /BLOCK switch is crucial for preserving file format).
    • Run NETSETUP on the server in "Advanced mode" to configure it for remote client boot requests, repeating for each client.
    • Log into the server and use the Network Control Program (NCP) to DEFINE NODE and SET NODE entries for new clients, pointing them to the appropriate task image file on the server.

The document also includes Troubleshooting tips, such as verifying network connections and server interface status if no response is received, or checking task image file listings and ensuring they are sequential with a fixed record size (re-copying with /BLOCK if necessary) if the server is reached but no service is received.
