StorageWorks Command Console Agent Version 1.0 for Windows NT User Guide

Order Number: EK-C10IN-UG

This document is the User Guide for StorageWorks Command Console Agent Version 1.0 for Windows NT®, published by Digital Equipment Corporation in August 1996.

The Command Console Agent is a companion server application to the Command Console Client graphical user interface (GUI). It runs on a host system to facilitate the configuration, operation, and monitoring of the host's storage subsystems. It connects to Command Console Client sessions over the TCP/IP network protocol.

Key functionalities and features include:

  • Storage Management: Allows clients to configure, operate, and monitor connected storage subsystems.
  • Access Control: Provides network address-based access protection, allowing different Client sessions varying levels of access (high-level monitoring, low-level monitoring, or full configuration access).
  • Fault Notification: Monitors storage subsystems for faults and sends asynchronous notifications to connected Client sessions (via TCP) or SNMP-compatible monitoring applications (via SNMP).

System Requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows NT 3.51 (build 1057 or later).
  • Hardware: Intel 486 (66 MHz, 16 MB RAM, 1 MB disk) or Windows NT-compatible Digital Alpha system (1 MB disk), both requiring a CD-ROM drive.
  • Network: TCP/IP-compatible network card.
  • Controller: StorageWorks 2 or 6-port controller with operating firmware Version 3.0 or higher.

The guide provides detailed instructions on:

  • Installation: How to install the Agent on a host system, including special instructions for Windows NT (manual/automatic startup) and UNIX-based Agents (network installation from an NT machine).
  • Running: How to manually start the Agent if installed with a "Manual" startup type.
  • Reconfiguration: How to change Agent settings post-installation using the CONFIG.BAT utility, requiring a stop and restart of the Agent service.
  • Uninstallation: How to remove the Agent program using UNINSTAL.BAT.

For advanced users, the guide explains how to manually edit four ASCII configuration files to fine-tune Agent behavior:

  • services file: Defines the network port numbers used for Agent-Client communication.
  • steam.cfg (Agent Configuration file): Contains core Agent settings, including the path to executables, an encrypted password, manufacturer name, and SNMP enterprise assignment number.
  • client.ini (Client Access file): Configures access permissions for each client system (system network address, notification method, and allowed access level).
  • storage.ini (Subsystem Identification file): Configures Agent to communicate with specific storage subsystems on the host, including their names, drive IDs, and monitoring intervals.
