StorageWorks Command COnsole Agent Version 1.0 for Digital UNIX User Guide

Order Number: EK-C10DU-UG

This document is the User Guide for StorageWorks Command Console Agent Version 1.0 for Digital UNIX®.

Purpose & Functionality: The Command Console Agent is a companion server application designed to assist the Command Console Client (a graphical user interface program) in configuring, operating, and monitoring a host system's storage subsystems. It runs on the host and connects to Client sessions via TCP/IP. A key feature is its ability to provide asynchronous fault notifications to connected Client sessions (via TCP) or SNMP-compatible monitoring applications. It also offers network address-based access protection, allowing different Client sessions varying levels of access (e.g., high-level monitoring, low-level monitoring, or full configuration capabilities).

System Requirements (for Digital UNIX):

  • A Digital UNIX-compatible platform.
  • Minimum of 2 MB free space in /tmp and 4 MB for the Agent's installation directory.
  • Digital UNIX version 3.2 C, D, or F.
  • StorageWorks 2 or 6-port controllers running operating firmware Version 3.0 or higher.
  • Requires at least one logical volume to exist on each storage subsystem prior to installation.

Installation: The Agent can be installed from a Windows NT system (acting as the installer host) over a network connection to a remote Digital UNIX host. The process involves running an INSTALL.BAT script, which uses FTP to transfer files and Telnet for remote configuration, requiring superuser (root) access on the target UNIX host.

Operation & Management:

  • Once installed, the Agent starts automatically and is configured to restart automatically if the host system reboots (via an entry in /etc/inittab) or if the Agent process stops (via a crontab entry for root that checks every 15 minutes).
  • Reconfiguration is performed by executing the config.sh Bourne-shell script in the Agent's binary directory.
  • Uninstallation can be done either through the config.sh script (Option 5) or by directly running the uninstal.sh script.

Advanced Configuration (Manual Editing): For advanced users, the Agent's behavior can be manually customized by editing several ASCII configuration files:

  • /etc/services: Defines the network port numbers (default 4998 and 4999) used for communication between the Agent and Clients.
  • steam.cfg: The primary Agent configuration file, specifying device paths, an encrypted password, manufacturer name, and SNMP enterprise assignment.
  • client.ini: Configures access for Command Console Clients, detailing the network addresses of remote systems, the notification method (none, TCP, SNMP, or both), and the level of access granted (high-level monitoring, low-level monitoring, or full configuration).
  • storage.ini: Configures the Agent's communication with storage subsystems, including user-defined subsystem names, their Digital UNIX device IDs (driveID), and the interval at which the Agent performs periodic status checks.
  • Miscellaneous Support Files: Important system files like /etc/.STEAMDIR, /etc/inittab, and /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root are modified during installation to manage the Agent's directory location and ensure its automatic startup and monitoring.
