This document provides step-by-step instructions for self-maintenance customers and service representatives to upgrade an AlphaServer 1000 system to an AlphaServer 1000A Model 5/xxx.
The upgrade process involves:
- Preparation: Safely shutting down and powering off the original system.
- Hardware Transfer: Systematically removing various components (top cover, side panels, StorageWorks hard drives, option cards, CD-ROM drive, and memory modules) from the AlphaServer 1000 and reinstalling them into the new AlphaServer 1000A Model 5/xxx enclosure provided in the upgrade kit. A critical caution notes that ECC SIMMs from the old system are not compatible with the new 5/xxx models and must be returned.
- Configuration Update: Rebuilding the EISA Configuration Data using the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) diskette (V1.9 or later), ensuring the correct version for the specific operating system.
- RAID Firmware Update (if applicable): Strongly recommending updating the StorageWorks RAID controller firmware to version V3.11 or later, which includes creating a utility floppy and backing up existing configurations before proceeding.
- System Finalization: Verifying custom system settings/variables (CMOS for Windows NT, SRM console for Digital UNIX/OpenVMS), rebuilding the operating system kernel (for Digital UNIX systems), and booting the new system.
- Completion: Confirming the CPU speed on the operator control panel and arranging for the return of the old AlphaServer 1000 system.
