This document provides instructions for replacing an External Cache Battery (ECB) in Compaq HSZ70, HSG80, and HSZ80 array controllers. The procedures differ based on whether the configuration is a dual-redundant controller or a single controller, and also includes steps for specific HSG80/HSZ80 versions, some allowing for "cabinet power on" replacement.
General Steps for ECB Replacement:
- Connect a PC or terminal to the controller.
- Disable failover for dual-redundant configurations.
- Shut down the controller(s) and/or turn off subsystem power as specified for the particular model and configuration.
- Insert the new ECB Storage Building Block (SBB) into an empty slot (or place it on top of the enclosure if no slot is available immediately).
- Connect the ECB Y cable to the new ECB.
- Restore power to the subsystem, allowing controllers to restart.
- Crucially, do NOT disconnect the old ECB until the new ECB's batteries are fully charged. The new ECB's status light will be continuously lit when fully charged (a blinking light indicates charging).
- Once the new ECB is fully charged, disconnect the ECB cable from the old ECB.
- For HSZ80 models, use the FRUTIL utility to reset the battery life counter.
- Remove the old ECB SBB.
- For dual-redundant configurations, enable failover to re-establish the dual-redundant setup.
Key Cautions:
- Handle the ECB cable carefully to avoid damaging the 12-volt and 5-volt pins, which can lead to cache module damage.
- Always ensure the new ECB is fully charged before disconnecting the old one.
