Digital's roots are deeply tied to MIT's Whirlwind computer project, which pioneered interactive computing concepts like real-time control and time-sharing. The PDP-1, introduced in 1960, was Digital's first interactive computer, known for its "spectacular" design by Ben Gurley and its role in fostering early computer "hackers" and even giving birth to games like "Spacewar!". Managing Growth: Digital's journey from a small startup to a multi-billion dollar corporation involved significant product evolution and organizational changes. Key product lines included:

  • Minicomputers (PDP-8, PDP-5, LINC): The PDP-8 (1965) was the first mass-produced minicomputer, making computing affordable and popular, and laying the groundwork for the OEM business. The LINC (1962) was an early, affordable "personal computer" for labs.
  • Mainframes (PDP-6, PDP-10/20): These 36-bit systems enabled commercial timesharing and became popular in university computer science centers.
  • PDP-11 Family (1970): Introduced compatibility and modularity with its UNIBUS architecture, becoming an industry standard and driving the development of diverse operating systems (DOS, RSX, RSTS, RT-11).
  • VAX Family (1977): The VAX-11/780 launched Digital's 32-bit architecture, emphasizing compatibility and scalability, and leading to innovations like the "VAX-on-a-Chip" (MicroVAX II). The VAX strategy aimed for a three-level hierarchy of compatible machines (data center, department, desktop).

Digital's manufacturing evolved from manual assembly in "The Mill" (Maynard, MA) to automated, global operations with a focus on quality and in-house semiconductor production. Sales and service adopted a customer-driven, educational approach, building strong relationships with technical users and developing the OEM model.

How Digital Works: The company's culture fostered open communication, entrepreneurship ("he who proposes, does"), and a strong engineering ethic focused on "doing the right thing." Challenges of rapid growth led to internal competition, but also to innovations in organizational structure, such as centralizing engineering and then decentralizing manufacturing into product-focused groups. Networking, especially through DECnet and the internal Easynet, became critical for communication, knowledge sharing, and managing a globally distributed workforce and business operations, embodying a "peer-to-peer" philosophy that valued collective intelligence over strict hierarchy.
