This document is the DECsystem 5100 Maintenance Guide, published by Digital Equipment Corporation in August 1990.
Purpose: Its primary purpose is to describe how to isolate hardware failures, troubleshoot, adjust, and repair DECsystem 5100 systems to the field replaceable unit (FRU) level. This includes procedures for running diagnostic self-tests and replacing components.
Audience: The guide is intended for Digital Field Service personnel and customers with self-maintenance agreements who have experience in replacing hardware components.
Key Contents: The guide covers:
- General Maintenance: System overview, visual checks, shutting down the operating system, running and interpreting power-up self-tests, monitoring the status LED display, and using console mode commands.
- Extended Self-Test Diagnostics: Detailed instructions on how to run and interpret extended self-test diagnostics for various system components (e.g., CPU, caches, memory, serial ports, SCSI, Ethernet), and power supply troubleshooting.
- FRU Removal and Replacement: Step-by-step procedures for disassembling the system unit and removing/replacing various field replaceable units, including disk drives (RZ23, RZ24), tape drives (TZ30, TZK10), diskette drives (RX23), memory modules (MS44), the system module, and the power supply.
- Reference Information: Appendices provide comprehensive details on console commands, system specifications (physical, environmental, and component-specific), a recommended spares list, status LED display interpretations, and parameters for diagnostic tests.
