Digital TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS V4.0 is a layered software product designed to enhance interoperability and resource sharing between OpenVMS, UNIX, and other TCP/IP Protocol Suite and Sun NFS-enabled systems.

Key Functionalities: It provides essential networking services including network file access (NFS, PC-NFS), remote terminal access (Telnet, rlogin), remote command execution (rsh, rexec), remote printing (LPD, Telnet Print Symbiont), mail services (SMTP), and application development tools (C sockets, QIO, Sun RPC).

Client vs. Server: A lower-cost client version is available, which excludes server components like NFS Server, BIND Server, PC-NFS Server, and the remote BOOT Server; an upgrade path to the full server license is provided.

New Features in V4.0 include:

  • IP/Multicasting: Support for multicast messaging and the Internet multicast backbone.
  • Dynamic Load Balancing (DNS-based): Optimizes workload distribution across cluster hosts.
  • RLOGIN Proxy: Facilitates proxy access to systems without requiring password interaction.
  • RCP (Remote Copy Procedure): Enables remote file transfers.
  • Outbound Telnet: Allows permanent creation of TN device names for remote devices.
  • OpenVMS Integration: Provides easier access to TCP/IP functions via DCL commands.
  • RPC/RPCGEN: Supports running procedures on remote systems and automatic generation of RPC calls using Sun RPC libraries.
  • OpenVMS 64-Bit Support: Compatibility with 64-bit OpenVMS V7.0.

Technical Foundation & Management: The product is based on the 4.3 Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) communications stack, supporting protocols like TCP, IP, ICMP, ARP, UDP, and RIP. It includes an Auxiliary Server (united) for service dispatching, a BIND Server for Domain Name System resolution, Remote Booting via BOOTP and TFTP, and an SNMP Agent for network management. It also supports Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) for high-speed networking and offers UCX Management with a DCL-style command-line interface.

Requirements: It requires OpenVMS V6.0 or later, compatible processors, and various Ethernet, FDDI, or Token Ring network adapters. It ensures interoperability with a range of UNIX-based NFS client systems.
