Order Number: AA-RH8WE-TE

This document, the "Tru64 UNIX Release Notes for Version 5.1B" (September 2002), provides essential information for users and installers on new features, significant changes, restrictions, and retired components of the HP Tru64 UNIX operating system.

Key New and Changed Features:

  • Performance & Storage: Support for variable memory page sizes ("Big Pages") for improved performance with large data, parallel scanning of SCSI and Fibre Channel buses for faster boot times, Logical Storage Manager (LSM) Fast Plex Attach for temporary volume copies (backups), metadata integrity by "Freezing Domains," the vfast utility for automatic file defragmentation and balancing, and dynamic LUN/UNIT expansion.
  • Networking & Security: IPv6 enhancements (including search tools, 6to4 transition, generic tunneling, and an Advanced API), Secure Shell (SSH) as a secure alternative to traditional network commands (rsh, rlogin, rcp), Common Data Security Architecture (CDSA) integration into the base OS, and support for the /dev/random and /dev/urandom character devices.
  • Internationalization (I18N): Support for Unicode Version 3.1, new Unicode locales (UTF-32 based), improved UTF-8 font support, and the dxim multilingual input server.
  • Other: Netscape 6.2.3 Web Client, ATI RV200 AGP graphics card support, SDLT320 Tape Drive support, an upgrade to POSIX Threads Library Version 3.20, Java Version 1.3.1 update, the Essential Services Monitor daemon (esmd), df -h for human-readable disk space, limited PCI device indictment, and the reintroduction of the Bookreader application.

Retired Features and Hardware:

  • Software Retired in this Release: Performance Manager CDE GUI, COM for Tru64 UNIX, DECmigrate, iPlanet Directory Server (replaced by OpenLDAP), specific AdvFS subsystem and fragment attributes, C++ run-time libraries (libtask, libcomplex), and several unsupported kernel object subsets.
  • Software Scheduled for Future Retirement: Utilities like emxmgr (replaced by hwmgr), automount (replaced by autofs), POSIX Threads metering, older SCSI device names (rz, tz), XIE Version 3.0 Client Extension, ATM IP Switching, the ogated routing daemon, DEC Ada RTL, the uerf utility, and older Tcl/Tk versions.
  • Hardware Retired in this Release: DETRA Token Ring network adapters, and specific storage array controllers (HSZ10, 20, 40, 50, 70) and disk devices (RZ55, 56, 57, 58, 73, 74).
  • Hardware Scheduled for Future Retirement: VME bus technology, certain array controllers (HSG60, HSZ22, HSZ80), and various network adapters and an FDDI adapter.

Important Notes and Restrictions:

  • Installation: Details on minimum disk space requirements (1GB minimum, 2GB recommended), the importance of firmware revision, procedures for installing on disks with Linux disklabels, setld utility issues for subset reloading, IMAP/POP server configuration, and several ignorable error messages during system boot.
  • Processor-Specific: Guidance on hardware upgrade sequences, considerations for expanded block sizes, notes on floppy disk drives, issues with KZPSA behind PCI-to-PCI bridge, Qlogic ISP1040B CAM errors, console multipath support for older AlphaServers, graphics resolution settings for AlphaServer 1000/A, CPU power cycling restrictions and hot-add limitations for AlphaServer GS systems, and CD-R/W burning caveats for AlphaServer DS25.
  • Operating System Software: Restrictions and workarounds for vdump with clone filesets/NFS, APIs affected by mixed-speed CPUs, Secure Shell usage, numerous Netscape Communicator and Web Client issues (including core dumps, display problems, and plugin loading), various SysMan applications and SysMan Station issues (potential data loss, display inconsistencies, launch failures, configuration restrictions), Account Manager restrictions, Prestoserve limitations, security authentication problems with multithreaded applications, known problems with HP Management Agents, and Event Manager reporting anomalies.
  • Development Environment: Details on changes to bcopy/bcmp/bzero argument types, updates to utmp structures, getaddrinfo() return status issues, POSIX Threads Library changes (including pthread_mutex_destroy behavior and memory alignment), the removal of pthread_debug() routines, and kernel programming interface modifications.
  • Window System: Limitations for multiscreen CDE, pixmap color errors with PanoramiX, non-functional X Print extension library calls, inaccessible dialog buttons on low-resolution displays, dtfile remote invocation issues, XOpenDisplay failures, CDE login hostname length restriction, and internationalization changes related to Unicode and keyboard support.
  • Documentation: The Software Product Description (SPD) is replaced by QuickSpecs, the Security and International Market manuals have been restructured, and there are notes on search functionality and online help issues.
  • Disk Space: Appendix A provides detailed disk space requirements for various software subsets for full and Remote Installation Services (RIS) installations.
