SHC011 VMS USERGUIDE GER.PDF

Order Number: XX-F31BC-DE

This document is a user manual for the "System Healthcheck for OpenVMS" utility, distributed on CD-ROM and dated April 1995.

Purpose: The utility is designed to collect comprehensive static and dynamic data from OpenVMS VAX (versions 5.0 to 6.2) and OpenVMS AXP (versions 1.5 to 6.2) systems. This data covers aspects like performance, security, configuration, and cost allocation for both standalone and clustered environments.

Process:

  1. Installation: Users install the System Healthcheck utility (version 1.1) from a CD-ROM, ensuring their system meets specific hardware, operating system, disk space, access rights, and process quota prerequisites. Special instructions are provided for heterogeneous VMSclusters.
  2. Data Collection: The utility guides the user through collecting data. This involves entering customer information, answering a questionnaire about system operations and security procedures, and defining the duration and timing for dynamic data collection. The collection proceeds in two phases: static (e.g., user accounts, security settings) and dynamic (e.g., I/O speed, disk utilization).
  3. Data Submission: After collection, the data is copied to a tape (e.g., TK50/TK70) or another agreed-upon storage medium and sent to Digital Equipment Corporation for analysis.
  4. Analysis and Consultation: Digital analyzes the collected data, comparing it against benchmarks, and generates a "System Healthcheck Report." This report includes a checklist, detailed results, and reference information. Subsequently, a Digital Multivendor Customer Service (MCS) consultant discusses the report with the user to address questions and formulate an action plan.

Manual Contents: The document provides detailed instructions on installation, running the utility (including language selection and menu navigation), performing data collection, troubleshooting common issues (with log file explanations), useful OpenVMS commands for setting up prerequisites, and specific procedures for using the utility in heterogeneous VMSclusters. It also includes examples of an installation script and excerpts from a System Healthcheck report.
