OpenVMS VAX Upgrade and Installation Supplement

This document, published in May 1993, serves as a supplement to the main OpenVMS VAX "Upgrade and Installation Manual," providing specific instructions for VAX 8200, 8250, 8300, and 8350 computers. It is intended for anyone responsible for installing or upgrading the VMS operating system on these particular VAX models.

The supplement covers four main areas:

1. Console Subsystem: Describes the console terminal, control panel (switches, indicator lights, restart button), console dual-diskette drive (RX50), and the console command language, all crucial for system control and installation.
2. VMS Operating System Installation: Provides computer-specific details on device naming, system power-on procedures, and methods for booting standalone BACKUP from various media (local/HSC tape/disk or floppy diskettes) to facilitate the initial transfer of the VMS save set and subsequent booting of the new system disk.
3. Startup and Shutdown Procedures: Details various ways to boot the system (automatic, manual, from local drives, HSC drives, or different directories), including steps for creating and using auxiliary boot command procedures and performing conversational boots to change system parameters. It also outlines orderly and emergency shutdown procedures.
4. Backup Procedures: Explains how to use Standalone BACKUP to create complete backups of the system disk, covering its installation (on the system disk or floppy diskettes), booting, backing up, and restoring the system disk, as well as backing up the console RX50 diskette itself.

Additionally, an appendix provides instructions for configuring serial lines on the specified VAX computers. The document emphasizes its role as a companion to the primary installation manual and other VMS release documentation.
