Open VMS SUMSLP Utility Manual

Order Number: AA-PS6EA-TE

The Open VMS SUMSLP Utility Manual describes SUMSLP, a batch-oriented editor designed for OpenVMS AXP and VAX operating systems. Its main purpose is to update source files by applying changes from one or more SUMSLP update files to a single input source file.

SUMSLP requires an input source file (the file to be edited) and SUMSLP update files, which contain the specific editing commands and any new text. After processing, it generates a new output file containing the updates. Optionally, it can also produce a listing file that displays the original lines, inserted lines, and an audit trail detailing the changes.

Users interact with SUMSLP through specific editing commands and operators to add, delete, or replace lines in a file. These commands are line-number based, and the audit trail text can be customized or suppressed. When multiple update files are used, SUMSLP processes them sequentially, resolving any conflicting commands based on their specified precedence.

The utility is invoked using the EDIT/SUM DCL command, runnable both interactively and through command procedures. Various qualifiers like /LISTING, /OUTPUT, /HEADER, and /UPDATE provide control over the generation and format of output files and the selection of update files. A notable limitation is that input source files cannot exceed 32,767 lines.
