Monitoring Performance History (MPH) is software distributed with OpenVMS Version 7.0 that collects vital system data. Its purpose is to gather information like error logs, crash dump summaries, system configuration, and performance data from installed systems. This data is transmitted back to Digital to help define standards and improve future OpenVMS releases, specifically for metrics such as MeanTime Between Crash (MTBCr) and MeanTime Between System Interruption (MTBSi).
MPH performs three main functions: capturing error log updates, recording crash dump profiles after system reboots, and tracking hardware configuration changes. All collected data is stored locally in the MPH$COPY area, compressed, and then transported to Digital's processing site on a weekly or daily basis. Data transport can occur via DSNLink, direct Internet email, or through DECnet by copying to an intermediary MPH-enabled cluster that uses DSNLink. Installation requires approximately 1200 disk blocks.
