OpenVMS Obsolete Features Manual

Order Number: AA-PS6JA-TE

This manual, published in May 1993, documents obsolete and eliminated features of the OpenVMS VAX operating system. It is intended for users who maintain programs and command procedures that reference these features.

The document is structured into four main chapters and an appendix:

  • Chapter 1: Obsolete DCL Commands and Qualifiers - Lists commands like SET CLUSTER/QUORUM, SET DEVICE/ACL, SET DIRECTORY/ACL, SET FILE/ACL, SET QUEUE/ENTRY, and SHOW MAGTAPE, along with their replacements (e.g., SET ACL/OBJECT_TYPE=DEVICE for SET DEVICE/ACL). It also covers obsolete qualifiers for commands like INITIALIZE/QUEUE and START/QUEUE.
  • Chapter 2: Obsolete System Services - Details system services such as $BRDCST, $CNTREG, $CRELOG, $DELLOG, $GETCHN, $GETDEV, $INPUT, $OUTPUT, $SNDACC, $SNDSMB, and $TRNLOG, providing their current service replacements where available. Some services like $SETSFM and $SETSSF are listed as obsolete with no direct replacements.
  • Chapter 3: Obsolete RTL Routines and Notation - Describes obsolete FOR$ and PPL$ routines, providing their OTS$ routine replacements (e.g., FOR$CNVOUTI is replaced by OTS$CVTLTI). It also covers obsolete terminal-independent screen manipulation procedures (like LIB$DOWNSCROLL, LIB$ERASELINE, LIB$PUT_SCREEN) which are superseded by SMG$ routines, and notes that LIB$EMULATE is no longer necessary.
  • Chapter 4: Obsolete Utilities and Utility Components - Focuses on the Disk Quota Utility (DISKQUOTA), which has been superseded by the System Management (SYSMAN) Utility, and lists obsolete components of other VMS utilities like Runoff and Librarian.
  • Appendix A: Eliminated Features - Lists DCL commands (e.g., SET PROCESS/CPU=[NO]ATTACHED), utilities (SUMSLP editor), RTL routines (SMG$ALLOW_ESCAPE), and privileges (TMPJNL, PRMJNL) that are no longer functional and have no replacements.

The manual advises users to use current commands, services, and routines in new programs and to update older programs for easier maintenance, as obsolete features are no longer updated. Eliminated features are entirely non-functional.
