OpenVMS System Messages and Recovery Procedures Reference Manual

M–Z

Order Number: AA-PVXLA-TE

This document, published in May 1993, is the second part of the OpenVMS System Messages and Recovery Procedures Reference Manual, covering system messages alphabetically from M through Z. It is intended for all OpenVMS users, including programmers and system managers.

The manual describes the standard format of OpenVMS system messages, which include a facility code, a severity level (Success, Information, Warning, Error, Fatal), a one-word identification code, and a descriptive text. It explains how the operating system reports these messages and how users can retrieve detailed information using tools like the F$MESSAGE lexical function or the HELP/MESSAGE utility from DCL prompts.

The document also provides guidance on recovery procedures for various error conditions, categorizing them into:

  • Command Entry Errors: Issues with spelling, syntax, or incorrect file specifications, typically resolved by reentering the command.
  • Unavailable Resources: Problems like insufficient dynamic memory or inaccessible files; some may cause processes to wait, others result in immediate errors.
  • Programming Errors: Caused by incorrect arguments in procedure calls, logic errors, or improper execution environments, for which the OpenVMS debugger is recommended.
  • System Software or Hardware Errors: Critical issues requiring notification of the system manager and submission of a Software Performance Report (SPR) with diagnostic information like system dump files.

This manual supersedes "VMS System Messages and Recovery Procedures Reference Manual: Part II, Version 5.4" and supports "OpenVMS AXP Version 1.5" and "OpenVMS VAX Version 6.0".
