DECnet/OSI Version 7.0 for OpenVMS Alpha is a software product implementing Phase V of Digital Network Architecture (DNA) for OpenVMS Alpha systems. It integrates DECnet and Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) network protocols, allowing them to share network functions up to the Transport layer. This enables participation in multivendor, multiprotocol networks, including TCP/IP (requiring a separate TCP/IP stack), adhering to open networking standards.
Key features include:
- Protocol Support: Combines DNA Phase V, DECnet Phase IV, and OSI protocols. Allows DECnet and OSI applications to run over TCP/IP transports.
- Addressing & Routing: Supports 64-bit addresses (for $QIO interface) and 32-bit applications, increased network size with ISO OSI addressing, segregated routing (Phase IV vs. V), and reverse path caching.
- Layers: Provides Data Link (Ethernet, FDDI, HDLC), Network (CLNS, CONS, ES-IS routing), Transport (OSI Classes 0, 2, 4; RFC 1006; NSP), and Upper Layers (Session, Presentation, Application with ACSE, FTAM, Virtual Terminal).
- Applications: Includes File Transfer, Access, and Management (FTAM), Data Access Protocol (DAP), Virtual Terminal (VT), and DECnet applications like file/record access, remote terminal, mail, and phone.
- Network Management: Features a Graphical Network Management user interface, Network Control Language (NCL) based on DNA CMIP, and an NCP emulator for Phase IV systems.
- Naming Services: Supports DECdns (global), DNS/BIND (for TCP/IP), and a new local namespace.
- Other Services: Distributed Time Service (DECdts), downline loading, downline task loading, and upline dumping.
- Programming Interfaces: Offers OSI application programming interfaces (APIs) for FTAM, ACSE, Presentation, Session (including a new SPI), and Remote Operations Service Element (ROSE).
- System Integration: Configurable cluster members from any node and VMScluster alias support.
- Standards Conformance: Designed to conform to various ISO standards and U.S./U.K. GOSIP requirements.
Installation is simplified using the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility. It requires OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.0 and specific OpenVMS classes, with distinct End System and Extended Function licenses.
