NetBeans™ Version 3.6 for OpenVMS

This document is an Installation Guide for NetBeans™ Version 3.6 for OpenVMS, published in January 2005, and is primarily intended for system administrators.

Key Requirements for Installation:

• Operating System: OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1 or higher, or OpenVMS I64 V8.2 or higher.
• Software: Java™ Platform, Standard Edition, Development Kit (JDK) v1.4.2-x. Java 5.0 is not supported. If a different or older supported Java version is used, the NETBEANS$JDK_HOME logical name must be set.

• Hardware:

  • Minimum 500MHz processor, 128MB RAM, and 75,000 free disk blocks.
  • For best performance, 667MHz processor and 256MB RAM per concurrent user are recommended.

• Disk Type: NetBeans must be installed on an ODS-5 disk, and the NetBeans user directory must also reside on an ODS-5 disk.

• System Configuration: Requires specific authorized privileges (e.g., BYPASS, SYSPRV), minimum disk quotas, and SYSGEN values (e.g., CHANNELCNT >= 2000). A system disk backup is recommended before installation.
• X Window System: Optimal performance is achieved when running NetBeans on an OpenVMS workstation that locally hosts the X Window display. Specific eXcursion fonts may need to be installed.

Installation Process:

• Uses the PCSI installation utility via the PRODUCT INSTALL NETBEANS36 command.
• The installation destination must be an ODS-5 disk, explicitly specified with /DESTINATION=<ODS5$DISK>:[<DIRECTORY>] if the system disk is not ODS-5.
• Requires acceptance of various license agreements for NetBeans and its included software components. The installer will check prerequisites and offer to terminate if they are not met (e.g., incorrect Java version).

Post-Installation and Usage:

• A system-wide symbol for NETBEANS can be defined in SYS$MANAGER:SYLOGIN.COM to simplify launching the IDE.
• Plug-in modules found on the OpenVMS eBusiness CD need to be copied to an ODS-5 disk and renamed to lowercase before installation.
