This document is a "Read Before Installing" guide for Digital DCE for OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha Version 1.3B (MUPB), a mandatory update.

Key Information:

  • Update Purpose: Version 1.3B is a mandatory update that replaces Digital DCE for OpenVMS VAX and Alpha Version 1.3A. It's a complete kit, not requiring a previous version for installation, and can be installed on new systems or as an update. It is functionally equivalent to Version 1.3A.
  • Problems Fixed: The update addresses numerous issues, including:

    • ACCVIO terminations in DCE$CDSCLERK, DCE$CDSD, and DCE$CDSADVER processes during error handling.
    • DCE daemon terminations due to resource scarcity and daemons hanging in HIB state.
    • Non-thread-safe DTS time conversion routines.
    • Interoperability issues with OSF DCE R1.1 systems and OpenVMS DCE client configuration with Alpha NT security servers.
    • DCE$SECD process hanging on multiprocessor systems.
    • DCE startup failures on systems with DECnet/OSI and a cluster alias.
    • Synchronization problems with UDP and DCE daemons failing to reach steady state on multiprocessor systems.
  • Documentation References: Existing Version 1.3 documentation can be used, but references to installation directories (e.g., [DCEVAX013]) and saveset names (e.g., DCEVAX013) should be updated to include the MUPB suffix (e.g., [DCEVAXMUPB013]).

  • Licensing: The Run Time Services Kit does not require a separate license. Other kits (Application Developer's, CDS Server, Security Server) require a License Product Authorization Key (PAK) registered via the License Management Facility (LMF).
  • Installation Requirements:

    • OpenVMS VAX: Requires Version 5.5-2 or higher. If installing on VAX Version 6.0 or lower, a special DEC C/C++ Run Time Components Kit (AACRT060.A) must be preinstalled.
    • OpenVMS Alpha: Requires Version 1.5 or higher. If installing on Alpha Version 1.5, a special Alpha AXP PreInstallation Kit (DCEPRE013.A) must be preinstalled.
  • Kit Contents: The kit includes the Bill of Materials, media, and various hardcopy, Bookreader, and printable documentation (e.g., Installation Guide, Product Guide, Reference Guide, Release Notes).

  • Release Notes: Users should consult the Release Notes (SYS$HELP:DCE013B.RELEASE_NOTES) for important installation instructions, technical changes, known problems, and potential adjustments to system/process parameters.
  • Important Disclaimer: This Mandatory Update (MUP) has not undergone exhaustive field testing. Digital makes no representations regarding its use or performance, and the customer is solely responsible for adequate data protection and backup when using this MUP.
