This document provides comprehensive instructions for installing a 5.25-inch device option (BA35X-AA) into a StorageWorks BA346-K series deskside expansion pedestal.
Key Steps and Information:
- Prerequisites: Ensure you have the compatible 5.25-inch storage device, the installation kit, common hand tools, and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection (mat or wrist strap). Familiarize yourself with the device's documentation, especially regarding SCSI bus termination and address settings. The device must comply with UL1950, CSA950, or EN60 950 safety requirements.
- Planning & Inventory: Plan device selection (half/full-height), mounting locations, and determine SCSI device and pedestal configuration addresses. Inventory all components in the installation kit.
- Pedestal Preparation: Power off the controller and pedestal, disconnect all cables (AC, external SCSI, I/O), remove the front door and side cover. Crucially, note the existing configuration address (jumpers W1-W3, J18).
- Device Installation (into Modular Carrier):
- Remove the pedestal's filler panel.
- Carefully remove the modular carrier's device filler panel ONLY if installing a full-height or two half-height devices; it's essential for airflow with a single half-height device.
- Mount the 5.25-inch device(s) into the modular carrier, securing them with screws.
- Connect necessary adapter cables (68-pin to 50-pin) and the 5.25-inch I/O cable.
- Modular Carrier Installation (into Pedestal):
- Align and slide the modular carrier into the pedestal, ensuring its hooks engage the slots.
- Guide and connect the 5.25-inch device I/O cable to the backplane connector J10 and secure it to the rear panel.
- Connect DC power connectors to the devices.
- Setting Configuration Addresses:
- All devices on a single SCSI bus MUST have unique addresses (0-6 are valid for 5.25-inch devices; 7 is for the controller). Duplicate addresses will cause malfunction. Set per manufacturer instructions.
- Use jumpers W1-W3 on connector J18 to set the pedestal's configuration address.
- Completion: Check all bus configurations and addresses. Replace the side cover (before turning on power). Connect external SCSI cables and AC power. Power on the pedestal and verify proper operation, ensuring devices respond when the SCSI bus is active.
Important Cautions:
- Always use ESD protection when handling electronic components.
- Ensure all SCSI devices on a bus have unique addresses.
- Only remove the modular carrier's device filler panel if installing a full-height or two half-height devices to maintain proper airflow.
- Replace the side cover before applying power.
