This document is the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 CD-ROM User's Guide, published in March 1994.
Its primary purpose is to outline the contents of the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 CD-ROM and provide guidelines for installing and upgrading the OpenVMS VAX operating system, as well as accessing its documentation.
Key points include:
- CD-ROM Contents: The CD-ROM contains the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 standalone BACKUP, various save sets (OpenVMS VAX 6.1, DECamds 6.1, Monitoring Performance History), and comprehensive documentation in both Bookreader and ASCII text/PostScript formats, along with the Software Product Description (SPD).
- Installation: Users can install OpenVMS VAX 6.1 on new VAX computers or by completely overwriting an existing system disk. This process initializes the system disk, deleting all previous contents.
- Upgrading: Users can upgrade to OpenVMS VAX 6.1 from existing OpenVMS VAX Versions 5.5-2, 5.5-2H4, or 6.0. An upgrade does not initialize the system disk, preserving user files and layered products. Direct upgrades from VMS Version A5.5-2 are not supported.
- Caution for both: If system directory names have been changed, the installation or upgrade procedure may not work correctly, requiring a restoration to a standard directory structure.
- Detailed instructions for both installation and upgrading are found in the "OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 Upgrade and Installation Manual."
- Accessing Documentation: Documentation is available in PostScript (.PS) files for printing, ASCII text (.TXT) files for viewing/printing on terminals, and Bookreader (.DECW$BOOK) format. To read Bookreader files, users need DECwindows Motif software and must define specific logical names (
DECW$BOOK and DECW$BOOKSHELF) to point to the documentation directories on the CD-ROM.
