This document is the HP DECprint Supervisor (DCPS) for OpenVMS Software Installation Guide, Version 2.5, published in November 2005. It provides instructions for system managers on how to install the DECprint Supervisor software on supported OpenVMS Alpha, I64, and VAX operating systems (ranging from VAX V5.5-2 to Alpha/I64 V8.2).
The guide details two installation methods:
- POLYCENTER Software Installation Utility (PCSI): The primary method for OpenVMS V6.2 and later.
- VMSINSTAL: Used for older OpenVMS versions (prior to V6.2), typically requiring a specific HP-provided kit.
Key pre-installation requirements and considerations include:
- Operating System Version: Verifying that the OpenVMS version is supported. Installing on unsupported versions is at the user's risk.
- Disk Space: Ensuring sufficient disk space is available for both installation and permanent use.
- Related Software: Dependencies include the C Run-Time Library (mandatory, with specific installation steps for older VAX systems), PrintServer software, compatible TCP/IP network services (HP TCP/IP Services, MultiNet, TCPware), and components for DDIF printing (DECwindows or DAS).
- Incompatibilities: DCPS V1.1 and later cannot coexist with DEC Image Print-PLUS (ICPS) V1.x. AppleTalk network support is explicitly noted as non-functional on OpenVMS V8.2 and later due to OS changes.
- Mismatched Components: Warnings are given about the presence of older DCPS files in
SYS$SPECIFIC directories, which can cause unpredictable behavior.
The installation process generally follows these steps:
- Preparation: Reviewing release notes, stopping existing DCPS print queues (if running), and removing any conflicting files from
SYS$SPECIFIC areas.
- Execution: Invoking the chosen installation utility (
PRODUCT INSTALL DCPS for PCSI or @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL for VMSINSTAL).
- Checks: The installer verifies disk space, confirms the queue manager is running (required for the Installation Verification Procedure - IVP), and presents options for stopping active DCPS queues.
- Configuration: Specifying locations for DCPS layup files and a spool directory (a non-system disk is recommended for spool files).
- Installation: The software is installed into the
SYS$COMMON area on the system disk, irrespective of any alternate destination specified during the process.
- Verification: An IVP automatically runs to confirm successful installation, creating and then deleting a temporary test print queue.
- Post-Installation: Restarting any stopped queues and referring to the
DCPS System Manager's Guide for instructions on creating and customizing print queues.
