This document describes the beta release of Subversion (SVN) 1.8.13 for OpenVMS I64, a port of the open-source version control system including client and server tools, dated October 2017.

Key points include:

  • Introduction: It's a port of Apache Subversion 1.8.13 for OpenVMS, providing version control for software development teams.
  • Requirements:

    • VSI OpenVMS 8.4-1H1 or higher.
    • Must be installed and used on an ODS-5 enabled disk.
    • HP TCP/IP Services V5.7 or higher (MultiNet is not verified but may work).
    • Users should have good knowledge of OpenVMS and software development.
  • Installation:

    • Provided as an OpenVMS PCSI kit (VSI-164VMS-SVN-V0108-13A-1.PCSI).
    • Installed by a privileged user using $ PRODUCT INSTALL SVN.
    • Post-installation: Requires adding SVN$STARTUP.COM to SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM and SVN$SHUTDOWN.COM to SYS$MANAGER:SYSHUTDWN.COM. Users also need to run SVN$ROOT:[BIN]SVN$DEFINE_COMMANDS.COM to set up utility commands.
    • Alternative Location: If installed outside SYS$SYSDEVICE:[VMS$COMMON], the startup/shutdown scripts must be manually copied to the system's SYS$STARTUP directory.
  • Recommended Reading: Users new to Subversion should consult the documentation at https://subversion.apache.org/.

  • Known Issues and Limitations (as a beta release):
    • Requires UNIX-style path syntax.
    • All files must be stream-If format.
    • Problems observed with very large repository checkouts (can often be resumed).
    • svn status may show duplicate file names (innocuous).
    • Issues in mixed cluster environments are being investigated.
    • Connecting to a Subversion server via SSH tunnel is not currently supported.
    • Debug logging is enabled in this release for diagnostic purposes.
    • Problems with svn import over secure (SSL/TLS) connections.
    • Administrators Toolkit not fully tested.
    • Problems with svn diff and svn patch for adding new files are being investigated.
