PASCAL Installation Guide Ver 1 Sep83

This document is an installation guide for the TOPS-20 PASCAL compiler (Version 1.0) on the TOPS-20 operating system, published in September 1983.

It specifies the necessary operating system versions (TOPS-20 V4.1 or V5.1) and required supporting software (LINK V5.1, RMS V1.2, and MAKLIB V2.2 for rebuilding).

The installation process, intended for a system manager or operator with 'WHEEL' privileges, involves several steps:

1. Preparation: Logging in with appropriate privileges and enabling commands.
2. Tape Handling: Mounting the PASCAL distribution tape (1600 BPI, TOPS-20 DUMPER format, containing five savesets for documentation, system files, tests, OTS/debugger, and compiler).
3. Directory Creation: Using the BUILD command to create specific directories on disk (e.g., for documentation, executables, tests, object-time system, and compiler files).
4. File Restoration: Employing the DUMPER program to restore the contents of the tape's five savesets into these newly created directories.
5. System Installation: Copying the essential PASCAL system files (compiler executables, run-time library, object-time system, debugger, and help files – .EXE, .REL, .HLP) from the created directories to the system (SYS:) directory.

Following installation, the guide details a system verification process using User Exerciser Test Programs (UETP) and standalone tests to ensure proper functionality. It also includes instructions for cleaning up temporary directories, and procedures for rebuilding PASCAL components, either with Autopatch (referring to external documentation) or manually, if modifications are required.
