This document serves as the release notes for Samba for OpenVMS Version 4.10-16A (February 2021), a VMS Software Inc. (VSI) supported update based on Samba 4.10.16, significantly upgrading from previous V4.6-5 versions.
Key New and Changed Features:
The most significant changes include the requirement for the WINBIND process on domain member servers (it was optional previously), which necessitates specific configuration changes and the removal of the WINBINDD_DONT_ENV logical name. Additionally, this release uses statically linked OpenLDAP client libraries, eliminating the need for a separate OpenLDAP installation.
Requirements:
System requirements include OpenVMS 8.4-1H1 or higher, VSI/HPE/MultiNet TCP/IP Services, an ODS-5 enabled file system, and the OpenVMS internationalization data kit (VMSI18N). Users must also adjust SYSGEN parameters like PROCSECTCNT and CHANNELCNT.
Installation & Configuration:
The software is installed via a PCSI kit. For upgrades, backing up existing CIFS configurations is recommended, as running old CIFS and new Samba in the same cluster is unsupported. The SAMBA$CONFIG utility handles server configuration (standalone or domain member) and can migrate existing CIFS settings. WINBIND configuration involves enabling it, setting a UIC number range, and optionally allowing dynamic OpenVMS account creation. Specific steps are provided for cluster installations, systems using TCPware TCP/IP (which requires manual interface configuration), and DNS requirements for member servers.
Unsupported Functionality ("What's Missing?"): This release does not support Primary Domain Controller (PDC), Backup Domain Controller (BDC), or Active Directory Domain Controller roles. The source code is not included in the kit but can be requested from VSI.
Known Issues:
Known issues include: difficulties with files and directories sharing names, potential WINBIND unresponsiveness on Alpha hosts if PQL_DPGFLQUO is too low, specific steps for Kerberos authentication with SMBCLIENT, incorrect OpenVMS owner for new objects (with a provided workaround: inherit owner = yes), the net rpc user rename command is not supported, and there is no support for Microsoft Windows XP/7 clients. The SMBCLIENT "more" command requires the GNV kit.
Fixed Issues:
Numerous issues have been resolved, such as NT_STATUS_NO_MEMORY errors, PID file cleanup, SMBD process crashes, password change failures, LDAP signing issues with net and wbinfo, WINBIND process hangs, and problems with shares on rooted logical names. Additionally, the map untrusted to domain parameter is no longer required and should be removed.
