This document is the Installation Guide for HP BridgeWorks Version 3.0A for OpenVMS, released in September 2004.
Purpose: HP BridgeWorks 3.0A is a cross-platform tool designed to enable and support enterprise-level distributed applications by encapsulating and distributing Alpha-based user applications, and includes several bug fixes.
Key Components & Architecture:
- Server Component: A native OpenVMS image installed on an OpenVMS Alpha system (Versions 7.3, 7.3-1, 7.3-2), which runs the wrapped application (3GL routines, ACMS tasks, DCL procedures, text files).
- Middle Component: A JavaBeans, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), or COM server. Its source code is generated on a Windows development machine and can be built on OpenVMS Alpha (7.3, 7.3-1, 7.3-2) or Windows XP/2000. It acts as a client to the server component.
- Development Tool: A GUI-based tool installed on a Windows machine.
Platform Support & Requirements:
- Supported: OpenVMS Alpha (7.3, 7.3-1, 7.3-2) for server and middle components; Windows XP SP1 and Windows 2000 SP2 or higher for middle components and the development tool.
- Unsupported (for 3.0A): VAX (use BridgeWorks 2.1A for VAX), OpenVMS Industry Standard 64 (Itanium) Version 8.2, OpenVMS Alpha Version 8.2, and Tru64 UNIX for middle components.
- Software Requirements (OpenVMS Alpha): HP C Version 6.5+, TCP/IP Services 4.2+, and optional Intra-cluster Communications (ICC) or DCE RPC Runtime Services Kit 1.5+. For Java/EJB, Java 2 SDK/RTE 1.3.1-7+ and a J2EE 1.2-compliant environment (e.g., WebLogic Server 7.0/8.1 SP1) are required. For COM, COM for OpenVMS 1.3 and Compaq C++ 6.5 are needed.
- Windows Requirements: Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 SP5 for COM components.
- System Resources: Specific disk space (4,500 blocks for install, 3,500 after) and process quotas (especially for Java applications) are recommended for optimal performance on OpenVMS.
Installation Process:
Installation requires both an OpenVMS kit and a Windows kit.
- OpenVMS: Download the self-extracting archive (
BWX030A_ALPHA.EXE), unpack it, then run PRODUCT INSTALL BRIDGEWORKS.
- BridgeWorks Manager: Version 3.0A installs an enhanced manager (BWX$MANAGER) that replaces but does not remove previous versions. It must be started with
@SYS$STARTUP:BWX$STARTUP.COM and requires SYSTEM privileges (or specific authorized account privileges) for startup and operation.
- Post-Installation: J2EE environments (e.g., BEA WebLogic Server) must be restarted after installation.
The guide also covers uninstallation procedures, running BridgeWorks on Windows, and accessing product documentation and support. Note: Some help topics and web links mentioned may be outdated.
