This document describes the AXIS2 for OpenVMS I64 release (July 2017), a core engine for web services. It's a complete redesign of the previous Apache AXIS SOAP stack, based on the latest Apache AXIS2 1.7.3 release from the Apache Software Foundation, and includes a prebuilt Java servlet. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade.

Key updates in this release (version 1.7-3 for OpenVMS) include:

  • Security Fixes: A fix for CVE-2010-3981 affecting the admin console, CSRF prevention, known XSS vulnerabilities, and other admin console bug fixes (AXIS2-4764, AXIS2-5716).
  • Bug Fix: A regression in the HTTP client code related to cookies (AXIS2-5772).

System Requirements:

  • OpenVMS 8.4-1H1 I64 and HP TCP/IP Services V5.7 ECO 2 (or higher).
  • Java JDK 1.8 for OpenVMS Integrity servers.
  • Apache Tomcat for OpenVMS (CSWS_JAVA) V8.5-16A or higher.
  • An ODS-5-enabled disk with at least 180,000 blocks of free space.

Installation and Configuration:

  • The software is provided as an OpenVMS PCSI kit and installed using $ PRODUCT INSTALL AXIS2.
  • Post-Installation: Users must define the logical name AXIS2$ROOT (recommended in SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM).
  • Deployment: The axis2.war file must be copied (in lowercase) to the Tomcat WEBAPPS directory and deployment verified by accessing http://nodename:8080/axis2.
  • Resource Management: AXIS2 is a resource-intensive Java-based product; specific process quotas are recommended for efficient operation, with an emphasis on monitoring and adjusting them as needed.

The supplied AXIS2 kit for OpenVMS includes all functionality supported by the Open Source AXIS2 1.7.3 release. Users are encouraged to consult the Apache AXIS2 web site for detailed documentation.
