This document is the Installation Guide and Release Notes for the Web Services Integration Toolkit (WSIT) for OpenVMS, Version 3.4-2, released in November 2016.

Key Points:

  • Purpose: WSIT is a collection of Open Source, standards-based integration tools for OpenVMS Integrity servers. It enables calling OpenVMS applications (written in 3GLs like C, BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, ACMS) from newer technologies like Java, Microsoft .NET, Java-RMI, JMS, and web services.
  • New in This Release (3.4-2):

    • Adds support for Java™ 8.
    • Crucially, WSIT 3.4-2 is NOT compatible with Java™ 6, and conversely, WSIT 3.4-1 is NOT compatible with Java™ 8. This kit should only be used with JDK 8.
  • Requirements:

    • Hardware: Approximately 80,000 blocks of disk space.
    • Software: OpenVMS I64 Version 8.4-1H1 or higher, ODS-5 disk.
    • Development/Runtime: VSI C V7.4-001 or higher (for development), and Java™ Development Kit (JDK) 8 for OpenVMS Integrity servers.
  • Installation:

    • Installed via an OpenVMS PCSI kit (VSI-I64VMS-WSIT-V0304-2-1.PCSI).
    • Requires integration of SYS$STARTUP:WSI$STARTUP.COM and SYS$STARTUP:WSI$SHUTDOWN.COM into the system's main startup and shutdown procedures, respectively.
    • The account running the startup procedure requires specific privileges (e.g., BYPASS, SYSPRV, TMPMBX).
    • Allows for runtime-only installation.
  • Directory Structure: Organizes components into subdirectories like deploy (server wrapper), docs (documentation), lib (internal files), samples (example programs), tools (development tools), and source (generated code components).

  • Performance Recommendations:

    • Increase the PRCLM quota for the operating system.
    • Adjust Java process quotas (e.g., PGFILQUO, BYTLM) to match typical UNIX systems for optimal Java performance on OpenVMS, as OpenVMS defaults are lower. BYTLM of at least 2,000,000 is recommended to avoid WSIConnectException.
  • Known Problems and Issues:

    • The AXIS2 java2WSDL tool modifies property names to begin with a lowercase letter; workarounds include using lowercase in WSIT IDL or manually modifying WSDL.
    • If calling WSIT applications from a web/application server, the wsi$root:[lib]wsirtl.jar file must be copied to the server's classpath (e.g., common/lib for Apache Tomcat), often requiring a server restart.
